Butterfly Grove Farm

Добавлен 2 июл 2017
I started on RUclips a while ago(known as TheSimStation) by recording games, mostly Farming Simulator. I loved the sense of going from nothing to slowly building things up. Today, I basically do the same concept only in real life, not in a game.
We bought 14 acres near our home in Burnet County, Texas. It was nothing but a mess of trees and brush when we began. Slowly, we are building it up so we can live out there. I still work full time to fund this project, so videos will maybe be once or twice a week.
When we compared costs, building our own solar and rainwater collection systems was cheaper than drilling a well and bringing on power, also, we wouldn't have any monthly bills, so I guess that means we are off grid. I'm not sure what homesteading is, but that is how we think of what we are doing out there.
I thoroughly enjoy making these videos, it is fun to watch my own progress out there. I hope you enjoy them too!

I was frustrated by the high cost of internet and told Spectrum goodbye over 6 months ago. I wanted to test out how well I made out by using only Visible as my internet, which promised "unlimited hotspot data at 5 Mbps". How good was it really or am I signing back up with my only option, Spectrum for $60 per month?

If you're somehow able to change the TTL on your desktop or through the router then you would be able to go faster than 5 megabits per second
The phone knows it's connected via hot spot, and thats where visible is limiting the speed so not sure how anything like that could speed up.
Hey at least your foundation is strong!
Lol, yeah, I was just testing that!
I have 2 guys that survived two crashes while everybody died around them (at this point i dont Really think they wanna survive the next crash)
This video did not provide any information. Just a dude talk about his phone.
I included a lot of info that was relevant to my usage history based on all my initial questions not knowing how it would work, but I am not sure what things other people would want to know. What information were you looking for, if I can answer a question I'd be happy to.
The music in the intro is a lot louder than the rest of your video, when I went from your last video I was like holy cow and had to turn down the tv!
ah, thanks for that information, I'll try to get better at normalizing them
looking good, on a side note, are you doing any more Farming sim games? Your map The Abandon Forest, is hands down still my favorite map. I still play it to this day once in awhile lol. I wish i knew how to convert it to fs22. I don't have the know-how or the time, with my 2 kids lol. But anyway, thanks for your videos love them all.
Hm, maybe, that seems like it was a simple map to try and convert. I put a lot less time in that one than Tazewell Co map. I don't have a lot of time to play these days due to other focuses but I'm curious myself. All I can say is maybe.
@@butterflygrovefarm I think it would it would do well in fs22, a lot of players these days love the homesteading style type maps. Yours in particular was so unique, and tons of fun! Thank you for hours of fun with the map, But I completely understand having no time, you have a lot going on right now!! lol.
I am on Visible+ for $35 a month. I use the hotspot as my internet source of my home network. My area is perfect for coverage. Not everyone can get the same results but I have had good service. Gl-iNet routers with the repeater is the best way to connect to the mobile hotspot.
Visible for the win 🎉🎉
Well you can’t change any of the rules so talk about the tractor 😮
Yeah, I don't do scripted talks, I go off on tangents a lot. That's why I leave Chapters so you can move on to what you like :)
Thanks fo this info. I recently dumped Spec for mobile, and went with Tello. A much better deal. I am looking toward using a cell phone tethered to a router, and dumping Spec for internet.
I have 2 LS tractors, a 73 horse and a 4O horse. Trading in the 414O for an MT347, but with a cab. Could not agree more about the high quality and affordable cost. The LS dealer between Marble Falls and Austin closed due to the death of the owner. I bought all three of my tractors from the dealer in Azle, even though it is not the closest. Good dealer and friendly folks!
That's sad, I did not know he had passed. I knew he had health issues, and spoke with him shortly before they closed. He did his best to not leave his customers without a dealer in the area. I knew he was trying to sell the dealership to someone else but the deal fell through for some reason. I assumed if it was a profitable business we'd still have an LS dealer in the area. I did not know how bad his health was. He was one of the few salesman that really cared about his customers and wanted to help them instead of just seeing the money. He was always genuine. That's a bummer.
Halleluiah light XD
Yep same over here Roy fiber broadband to the house for the win around £40 a month , and daniel have you finished building your southfork ranch yet farm sim 25 just around the corner later this year :)
nope lol. Wait is a new farm sim game really announced or is that a joke?
I liked the first part of your video until you said iPhones are crap, then I loved it 😂
Haha I feel a lot like you on this internet service...I recall many times you were like give me a few days to download that game then we can play.
@@butterflygrovefarm It's kinda funny that now you are on phone internet and we now have fiber lol
@@royfeagins2654 Yeah, I was thinking about that when recording lol. I was wondering what you would think haha.
Where did you get your filters and fluids? If you could list them that would be great!
My filters were all from my local LS dealer. He's out of business now, but any dealer can ship them to you, if you call them up they'll tell you what you need for the tractor. There may be aftermarket filters, but I went with OEM for this. I'd do that when tractor is under warranty. I recall stories from my dealer, and I think Messicks youtube has videos on where if you do have warranty problems, and they can point to you using a cheaper aftermarket filter, they may not honor the warranty. I would like to think LS would not do that, but best not give them any option there. The filter pack wasn't too expensive, I think it was around $80 for all the filters, but cannot really remember. Regarding the fluids, I just went into my local Deere dealer and got the correct viscosity engine oil. As long as it matches what the book recommends, it's good there and any local tractor dealer brand should work fine. Deere was the closest to me.
Amazing Video :)
Great video, you look good in blue!
Thanks, it is the only color tractor my wife would actually drive, all the other ones looked ugly to her!
wish they would make a decent brush guard. crazy how far it sticks instead of making it where you can open the hood and the move it back
Yeah, are there any brands that come with a good one? It's kinda crazy it is such a huge weakness across every tractor brand that I can think of.
Is there a link MR conversion help beta excel it means a lot to me
Are you guys living in the RV full time yet or just when working on the land?
Just using it to relax, cool off(or warm up) and for breaks to camp some nights. It's nice! Not living out there yet, maybe later this year.
That cracked me up but you got the job done. I can tell that the music was strictly inserted to cover up all the cuss words. 😂
I actually never got in habit of swearing so it's never something I do, I don't even think about having to stop myself. But that was one of the most frustrating days out there. Can't believe I didn't think to get a wrench the first time I went into town, I was not happy, lol, or smart. Ha
good job
Lol, not sure what's good about it lol. I got er done, that's about it. 😀
I'm stuck in suburbia with no tractor so I'll just live the tractor life vicariously :)
That reminds me, I need to update my profile image since that's my old smaller tractor.
About the emissions stuff, a year ago bought a 1999 Toyota Camry for basic transportation while out of town. The car drives great, gets 33MPG and is mechanically sound but it's a California emissions car and in the year I've had it and the only 3000 miles I've driven it, I've had a check engine light 3 times now, each time for a different emissions issue. I'm starting to think having a 25yo emissions system is going to be a constant headache, at least if I want to keep it operating as intended. I kinda wish I could just remove all that stuff and call it a day, as I said it runs and drives great!
lol, yeah, electronics just start to go when it gets old. It's one of the problems with tractors too. Buy older one with 20+ year old electronics but a lot of the modern emissions stuff gone, or buy new with it all at higher cost. I mean, I didn't have problems, they worked the kinks out and I think that's a big part of the hesitation back like 10+ years ago, things are better now, I just hate it long term, it's just even more stuff that can possibly go wrong. I like the fuel economy though!
Thanks for posting Dan! I love hearing you discuss farm equipment / tractors.
Thanks, I enjoy doing it!
I also forgot to mention that the online parts manual is awesome: lstractorusa.com/parts/ I do not know what other companies have, but their online manual for each tractor is excellent. I haven't broken anything on this tractor, but the smaller 25hp model, I broke a lot that I needed to lookup and have replaced.
Side note: At 40:20 the 25hp model still had a fuel injection pump, but this 47 hp has three pumps associated with fuel system. I meant it didn't have a fuel tank pump when I said the 25hp didn't have a fuel pump.
Is that mower/ cutting blade made for brush or grass? Id imagine if it's for grass it would get dull quickly cutting brush.
Yeah most those rotary cutters have a spec for cutting up to 2" saplings. I've taken 3" down and thats probably not the best but it does it and works awesome. Now if it was a finishing mower, yeah that's another story and wouldn't want to use something like that.
Actually, the more I think on it, this is probably why different regions call the same thing different names. Back home where we had almost all grass and very few trees or brush, these were called rotary mowers. Down here, most people call them shredders, probably because that's mostly what they use them for like me. Then I also hear the name bush hog, rotary cutter, and brush hog thrown around too but one of those is just a name brand. But when I was first looking at buying people and manufacturers call them different things, its not like there is an industry naming standard. I found that interesting
Link down. Could someone please give me the script to install fs19 wiring?
Sorry I don't have this script anymore, and not sure how I'd get it.
Looking good Dan, always a highlight on my feed to see a new video from you.
Thanks! Hope your farm sim map is going well.
MAN! THAT is dome REALLY HARD, ROCKY ground!
Really really rocky :)
To make your life easier get the centre clamp with the ground clip on the clamp top piece
Ah, good idea. It's amazing the thoughts that never enter my mind as a possibility. That would have made it a lot easier to assemble.
Unfortunately I lost the rest of me putting together the solar panels and wiring that up. I'll soon record an overview video going over all that project.
Looks like a fun adventure. We want to do ground mount solar on our house someday but man it’s expensive. Gotta figure out how to do it on my own instead of “the solar guys”
Yeah, when I looked at prices back at my old home it seemed like the markup for someone else installing was like double what it would cost to do myself. It saves a lot doing it yourself, and being off grid I don't have to worry about interconnection and inspections by utility etc.
well after watch the playlist i saw i somehow watched the last 3 clips and they say unlisted. Hey SIM from Havic o7
Hmm, I guess unlisted clips in a Playlist are still played? Ha oh well.
Coming along nicely Daniel. Looking good so far.
Thanks!
Why not make you posts higher so that you can use the space underneath as a car park? and potting shed may be at the lower end or a long tool bench or half and half. You could use glass on the front part so that the sun would get in. and start off your plants in the springtime.
It's high enough I can fit even a bigger 3/4 ton truck under just fine(although it's too long and sticks out the back), but because of the angle cars fit under just fine. I have other plans for under so don't want to close it in, as it would prevent using it for what I need. All good ideas though!
slowly getting there Daniel, start on the pool next week ? :) lol
I wish. The wife wishes too. One day! :)
I enjoy watching your progress, thanks for sharing!
Thanks man, me too. It's a big reason why I do these videos, I really enjoy looking back and seeing what it used to look like before I did work.
I am so proud of all your hard work, Daniel! I love you!
Aww, thanks honey!
Man that front loader is handy. Back in the day I helped build a lot of pole barns and houses with just 2 guys and ladders. Nice work!
Yeah, it's going to be a sad day when I have to sell it to pay for the house, but by that point I'll have more than gotten my money's worth out of the thing. It helps me do so much more work so much faster than I could by myself.
Are you using nails or screws for the rafter brackets?
Nails, if you see me using a tool, its a pneumatic palm nailer not a drill.
Most construction companies will use screws because they hold better.
@@farmercraig567 I don't claim to be an expert, but I did read that is a common misconception. Using the correct nail can actually hold tighter than a screw. I forget the documentation I read that in, but saw it in a few places, so just went with nails. Prior to reading that, I thought the same as those companies that screws hold better. I think generally that's true, but not in every application I suspect now. Anyway, we'll see over time, it's all exposed and can add to it later if it starts to get loose.
Solar Shed? You could put a Windmill on that slab 🙃 Concrete is just the worst..
Did I use the term "solar shed"? Kinda how I think of it but because it will house the solar equipment, not panels. Kinda deceptive. I looked into wind, and don't think it's worth it. Ideally you need it at least 25 feet off the ground and a large clear area of 100 feet around it with no trees.
And then there's the whole problem of how to tie it into my batteries. My battery bus is 48V, and my options for windmills are very limited at that level, also I'd worry about my batteries. My inverters are smart and know exactly what the batteries are due to communications, with windmill I'd just have to set it to turn off at a certain voltage range, and then you don't turn off a windmill, you have to use braking resistor to stop it from spinning out of control when batteries are charged. It's a lot of extra equipment, expense and setup, I'd rather just buy a few more batteries.
Making quite a bit of progress down the Dan. Really enjoying watching you build out your dream.
Building DIY is really a lot of fun, and worth that, but honestly, based on the tools and stuff I have to buy and that I don't get any discounts like builders do, and with inflation, I probably would be better off paying someone else to build everything and be done cheaper and faster. It's a bit depressing.
@@butterflygrovefarm yeah bidenomics at work there. But like you said, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it on your own. I'm not sure where you're getting materials but ask for a military/ veteran discount. If you're using one of the big box stores I know they offer 10%
@jacobjeurissen1823 yeah I'm using that when I go down to Lowes.
@@butterflygrovefarm Skilled labor is quite expensive so you're still better off DIY if you have the time
@@KerboOnYT Yeah, I guess I get frustrated with how much it actually costs it seems a lot cheaper up front, but because I lack experience there are always like 100 things I forget that I have to buy later that keeps driving up the cost. If I actually do the math I'm sure I still come out ahead like you say, but it doesn't feel that way based on how much I forget and have to go back and buy later to finish the project.
If Dan keeps this up he's gonna be looking like Hercules in no time! lol
If only lol. I seem to always want to increase my eating to match, so not Hercules ever :(
Wow, that is a LOT of concrete to mix by hand. Keep up the good work and stay safe
Some gravel leveled out under the pad would make it more consistent on thickness.
Definitely one of my lessons learned the hard way.
hey bud i like your mixer/generator setup on the front loaded! genus! im not a concrete expert but have done a lot of pad prep in the last few years.the better you prep the better the pad. concrete heats up to cure 28 plus days depending on the mpa (sorry i dont know if thats metric or imperial measurement🙄) to get to its final strength. the more consistant depth of concrete the less chanch of cracking as it cures. id also ask around your local concrete plants whats there minimum metered load delivered. they can also do higher mpa so less thickness needed
Yeah when I called around it was quite a bit cheaper to do it myself, and my motto is "it's just a shed" lol. Yeah I learned that the hard way, definitely going to put in more prep time next time.
I also learned that it was much better time wise to mix 4 times, dump each one into my bucket then dump the whole bucket. That went much faster.
Good to see ya back Sim. I hope ya'll are doing well and the project at hand goes smoothly! It sounds like fun, yet challenging at the same time.
It really helps fuel my appetite to learn new things, that is never ending
